I don’t have coasters… and I feel terrible now. But I’m committed to make some as a new auto drying clay project.

My umbrella is at my door, it was never a question.

Great volume xx

An umbrella, coaster, kettle substack ;) What a wonderful mix of some of my favourite topics haha ;) It makes so much sense that the comment section has all sorts of angles on these very important life impacting elements - love it....Three opinions from me: Coasters - ***imagine loud warning sounds for the following sentence haha ;) We're not really coaster users at all here in Ireland - I apologise for the whole of the island...I have no idea why but i'm guessing sociologically we make so much tea, we don't have time for a coaster...tea in mug, mug in hand, tea gone haha ;) Umbrella's - well I could be here all day on this topic so I'll just say my brolly is in my boot permanently ;) Love Ger Brett's contribution - too funny cos it's true ;) Also - follow on thought: it explains our love of Mary Poppins I'm thinking ;) We are a prepared lot here on the island with our brollies at the ready for all instances (well kinda prepared haha ;) And thirdly - The idea of a no kettle policy in a home...well I've just fainted haha ;) cos really...no kettle....... (P.S. Sorry only getting to comment on your substacks now...I've fallen way behind in leaving my thoughts after reading haha ;0 but so glad to be caught up now. Brilliant writing as always L x

HAHA! If the drink never leaves your hand or lips I suppose there is no need for a coaster!

If you ever house-sit stateside in the desert southwest (which would be fantastic bc we’d finally meet IRL!), prepare for umbrella-less householdsβ€”it’s sunny 330+ days a year here, and when/if it does rain it’s over in a minute.

For many reasons (you + sunshine) this sounds ideal and dreamy!

Lauren it's ireland!!! so in the car lives 1) cheap light small any colour/design

for light rain no wind, 2)the semi decent bigger stronger umbrella for torrential rain with wind gusts 3) The decent solid dark colour umbrella for somber events... & a replica of all these umbrella typesls can be found under the stairs & again in the shed outside due to the fact that after clearing the boot, letting umbrella dry & forgetting to replacing them to the car!! And again it's Ireland so chances are you may get stuck in a shower & purchase another!!

HAHA! This is PERFECT! I feel prepared to come over and visit Ireland now with this advice.

EASY TO FIND! Thank goodness.

I've also recently wondered about the diswasher signs - another task to the chore - and wondered, who's managing the sign? What if it identifies as clean but it's actually dirty? Who do we believe?? I feel gaslit.

Expand full comment

Unfortunately, in my experience, we believe the one person who is willing to empty or turn on the dishwasher, and has likely purchased the sign in the hopes other people in the house will help out... and they do not. HAHA.

One umbrella by the door, another in the car. Also I do go into a mild panic when I visit someone who hasn’t got coaster. I’m not prepared for that level of responsibility πŸ˜‚

NO COASTER PEOPLE HAVE SO MUCH TO ANSWER TO! HAHA. I am not done with my questions. "Where are the coasters?" is only the beginning!

We don't have an umbrella... I never used one, I've always just dropped a baseball cap on my head because I like to keep my hands free. And nowadays when I'm out, one or both hands are always used on my mobility scooter. And any journey where I'm not sat on that is taken by taxi (and then I have my stick in one hand).

Cuddles is the same, she sticks a hat on and calls it good. The one time she did buy an umbrella, it was a cheap one that lasted about ten minutes πŸ˜† If she wanted a good one we'd get her one, but we don't go out enough for it to matter much.

On the other hand we have 2 kettles, one in the spare room (aka my office) where I also have a bean to cup coffee machine and a mini second kitchen; and one in the bedroom, where we also have a milk warmer for our morning drinks - latte for me, hot chocolate for her.

We have our priorities 😁

LEE! I have missed seeing you here 🧑🧑🧑

AND YES! These priorities are on point!

I've missed being here. I'm trying to dig my way out of the hole I buried myself in, and this felt like a good (and safe) place to get back to πŸ™‚ It's nice to be welcomed back so enthusiastically, thank you! πŸ’œπŸ₯Ή

hahaha this is so true about the umbrella, what an interesting observation. Mine is currently in the wardrobe, stashed away until next rain season.

"No tea kettle, where am I?" -- love this and yes! "Coasters feel like an ongoing service" - perfectly stated. My umbrella collection (multiple sizes for light rain, down pour, freezing rain and sun coverage) is inside and at the front door in a beautiful green vase neighbors were giving away.

I LOVE THINGS THAT OTHERS WERE GIVING AWAY! This is beautiful! 🧑🧑🧑🧑 (and also top points for leaving your umbrellas in an easy-to-access place. Umbrellas? Another ongoing service, really!)
